Leicester and Northampton - have they lost their mojo?
Austin Healey expressing his thoughts in today's Daily Telegraph, some of which we may or may not agree with, but sometimes these things need to be said out loud.

Journalistic motor mouth mush alleviated by occasional half truths and speculation for which Austin should gain no favours.

There's an interesting article in the same paper about some English defence (and forwards) coach in France (some chap called Worsley) who's doing quite well. He says he wants to go back to Wasps, but maybe he could be persuaded to come to the sunnier side of the East Midlands.

I think Austin loves a bit of hyperbole, or probably the editors in the Telegraph do. Underneath all that is the more pragmatic truth. Yes, Wasps made some great signings but Toomua was in my opinion a better signing than Beale, though fate has intervened and made our star signing unavailable.
The key point though, almost glossed over, is the need for evolution.
Ironically, the rallying cry of Tigers supporters about 'the Tigers way' 'stoicism' or 'cussedness' seems to be the roadblock in moving the club forward, as seen in the team's willingness to repeat the same doomed strategy (charging into contact and getting turned over instead of playing territory)
The 'never say die' attitude needs to be combined with the modern approach to forward play, as seen by Munster, Saracens and many other teams that are currently taking us apart. It hurts to see us failing to secure our own possession by not committing enough players to the breakdowns, seeing players fail to put in the high number of tackles that are now expected of forwards, seeing backs fail to take the high balls, return kicks and play territorially, seeing our players fail to chase the ball.
If the culture has stagnated then it needs to change. I hope the team makes a valiant effort today but to be honest it seems we need a change in philosophy right now if we want to compete with the best teams.

Wasps probably thought their luck was out when Beale injured himself too. It's swings and roundabouts, but for us, worse timing. Beale is probably more of the "box office" figure that Wasps want/need to fill the Ricoh. Both quite versatile players though.maroontrunks wrote:I think Austin loves a bit of hyperbole, or probably the editors in the Telegraph do. Underneath all that is the more pragmatic truth. .
As for Austin, he'll write what he's asked to in his Austin way! Now, where's that plank...

Nothin Oz says about Tigers should be fully believed. He has a massive chip on his shoulder, believing he should be DOR I suspect, based on ego rather than proven talent.
Leicester Tigers 1995-
Nottingham 1995-2000
Swansea (Whites) 1988-95
A game played on grass in the open air by teams of XV.

Can't disagree with anything he says in that article no matter how annoyingly smug he may be.

no way can you disagree with what he says, its the same as everyone is writing on this forum and no doubt the same applies at saints.

Austin has hit the nail on the head. Annoying and smug he may be, but you need to see past the personality.

Oz is no businessman: he says;"Wasps, meanwhile, have rocked up on Northampton’s and Leicester’s doorstep with an apparently brilliant business model". Yeah Oz, a scheme that looks a wee bit... (refrains from libellous phrase) and is unlikely to sustain in the long term unless the casino starts firing £50 notes at the club

I shall look forward to Oz's in-depth analysis of how Wasps are going to repay £30m in 2022.Old Hob wrote:Oz is no businessman: he says;"Wasps, meanwhile, have rocked up on Northampton’s and Leicester’s doorstep with an apparently brilliant business model". I thought the article was more an extended Facebook post rather than a serious piece of journalism - not inaccurate , just shallow. Odd how rugby journalism / writing remains so poor compared with the Michael Athertons and Gideon Haighs of this world.

I know Tigerbeat - the worry is they might get some decent coaches in
