Fan radio

Post by ElvastonTiger »

Has anyone tried the new Tigers 'Fan radio' at Welford Road? I just wondered if it actually adds to the occasion and is worth the £15.
I tried one at Twickenham HQ last season and was distinctly underwhelmed but I guess a live Radio Leicester commentary could be a bit more informative.

PS: desperate as our performance was at Glasgow on Friday I still thoroughly recommend
it for an away trip if the chance arises again. Great hospitality and atmosphere to match.

I use mine to listen to the ref - which, although it does give you a good idea of what is going on, it can lead to feet stamping frustration when the official is Wigglesworth !!

I use it and think it's great.

It's much better quality (product and sound wise) than the Twickenham ones. For £15 it's a bargain as it works out at around £1 a game. You get the referee feed on one channel and the commentary on the other (if it's available). Not radio Leicester (thank god), but the BT Sport commentary.

Note that some referees talk a lot and some very little, but the explanations at downtime and the players comments at scrum time can be very revealing.

BBC Radio Leicester is available as it is possible to pick up FM transmissions.

We used to have the old Ref Link radios and it was great to hear the ref and the conversations with the players. Unfortunately everyone around us soon cottoned on and we were seen as the centre of all knowledge at the stoppages and seemed to spend ages explaining what was being said - for free. So much so it did begin to spoil the whole thing. Part of me says yes but the memory says perhaps not.

Unfortunately, these radios are not two-way, so I will not be investing.

I hope that I am not stating the blindingly obvious but what distinguishes the Fan Radio's from (normal) radios is that Tigers control when and what they receive. This is why next season the Fan Radio's will no longer pick up transmissions and why you can only receive radio signals during and at home matches.

Tigers will have had to pay an annual licence fee to transmit on the frequency and it is not cheap. Hence, this cost can be made up with the sale of the Fans Radios. £15 is pretty good value which works out at under £1 a game.
