Have we ever sold out the 'new' ground

Post by MrPartridge »

Just mulling over what attendance we might get for a Sunday game v Racing...

Had a look and highest attendance last year was Jan v Saints 25,849. Next best last season was 23K v Irish and this year we manage just over 24K v Wasps. Does that mean we technically have met ever sold out the new ground? I thought capacity was now over 26K.

A quick look at Google reveals that the attendance v Saints was a sell out.

As I said, Saints was a sell out and MrP said attendance v Saints was...

25,849. I had assumed that people would be able to put the two bits together.

I think that considering that about 7 years our average gate was less than 17,000 and now in excess of 21,000 we can safely say were packing them in

Surely the important part is regularly getting more than the old attandence.

If we were at capacity every week then it would be time to extend again :smt017

Don't some competition regulations require teams to set aside a percentage of the seats for visiting supporters? I guess it is possible that the unfilled seats are due to poor take up by visitors?

I think if the away team doesn't sell the tickets they get returned to the club 10-14 days before the game so we get the chance to sell them

Whilst sell outs are great, having some spare capacity means that there is more availability for new fans to come and see a game. How easy is it to get tickets for matches with other clubs with smalller grounds? What are the prices? (I have seen some very high ticket prices for away games).

Attendances at Tigers have regularly been above 18000 and there is no other team in the Premiership that has those regular attendance figures. The average attendances / tickets sold for each Premiership Club is clouded by some of the matches being played at Twickenham and Wembley.

Another related, albeit indirectly, consideration to the building of the new stands is the quality of what they replaced, along with aspects such as fire hazards. All the old wooden stuff and the temporary stuff needed/needs replacing, so a large portion of the cost needed to be incurred.

I suspect that until we have a drastic improvement in results the crowds will decline rather than increase . The Season Ticket base has held up pretty well so far despite several very average Seasons but that won't carry on for ever .

Not clear on that logic to be honest. Surely you want capacity every week and then work out the problem of how to get more fans in. I don't see the top class football teams aiming for anything less than a full ground each week.

Of course we are still the best supported team in the land and that is to be commended. But we don't get 24,000 very often (twice in since September 2015) and that was the old capacity that we'd fill at least 3/4 times a season. I'll leave a mathematician to tell me if crowds are going up...

I think building the new stand was a good plan and the result is a good outcome.

I don't know what the life of the stand will be, but it is going to be there for a few years so it needs to be a bit future proof. I understand that rugby crowds continue to grow, and Tigers average crowds continue to grow so putting a few more seats in feels like a good plan even if we can't fill them all now.

Also, I think the new stand makes the ground look a lot smarter, a bit more professional.

Packing out the ground has to be a primary objective, but maybe not the only objective, and maybe one that doesn't have to be realised straight away.
