There are some really dumb people on here if they genuinely don't understand the problem.
Re: Job Marler racially abusing a Welsh player? No Sanction
I would suggest that when a scrum is packing down saying ‘come on Gypsy boy’ to a young male of Roma stock is no more offensive, and quite possibly less so, than saying ‘come on sweatie’ to a Scot, ‘come on froggie’ to a native of France or ‘come on English pig dog’ which at least some of those aspire to the pc brush on this board bizzarely and inconsistently find side splittingly funny.biffer wrote:There are some really dumb people on here if they genuinely don't understand the problem.
If you find all of these unacceptably offensive I will at least accept that you have a point of view but at the moment I find the integrity of your argument strangely lacking and inconsistent.
What is really dumb is comparing ‘come on Gypsy boy’ on a sports field with apartheid.

Dumb? Having done a number of Equality and Diversity courses at work, I would say ignorant is more appropriatebiffer wrote:There are some really dumb people on here if they genuinely don't understand the problem.

You may consider that PC has gone mad, but in the courts the term is considered to be an aggravating factor, leading to a higher level of punishment (usually about 30% more severe).
Jones dealt with it immediately, much to his credit, as did Marler - this would be considered a mitigating factor. The offence (probably S5 Public Order Act) would still have been committed, however.
The main complainants at the outcome seem to be World Rugby, which takes a severe line on racism.
Marler needs to improve his sledging vocabulary.

100% agree! What is really dumb is comparing ‘come on Gypsy boy’ on a sports field with apartheid.
Where does this pathetic episode leave the Haka?
Sport is as much a test of mental strength as anything else.
Sledging is common place in most sports, are we going to get to a point where opponents can't even stare at thier opponents aggressively to intimidate, is that bullying?
This has further reaching implications should it be blown up out of proportion, but then some folk just enjoy stirring the pot, it's what they live for!

The term is used by, and even in the names of, many of the groups organisational bodies. The deny others the use of it is in itself discriminatory.fleabane wrote:You may consider that PC has gone mad, but in the courts the term is considered to be an aggravating factor, leading to a higher level of punishment (usually about 30% more severe).

Some say the term originates from 'Egyptian' and refers to Egyptians who were expelled from Egypt for harbouring Jesus.
Perhaps people with an interest should work towards raising the status rather than insisting that using it is denigratory.

Using the term isn't derogatory. Using it in a derogatory manner is.

Was it really used in that derogatory a fashion? Couple of props packing down, it's more affectionate than anything else. If you've never been called worse in a friendly way by your mates you've led a very sheltered life.Iain wrote:Using the term isn't derogatory. Using it in a derogatory manner is.

h's dad you've said everything I want to on this topic, thanks for saving me the typing time!
From what I've read, Jones and Gatland feel exactly the same and I suspect Lee and Marler too, the fact it's still ongoing is just pandering to the PC brigade, to whom we must all stand up!!

I really don't think Marler was trying to escort Lee to the gas chamber and you've been out on your shifting sands for a long time. The rest of us are all on the same side of the fence, it's just a question of where we think the fence should be.Iain wrote:The exchange was affectionate was it?h's dad wrote:Was it really used in that derogatory a fashion?
