Joe Marler has been suspended for two matches and fined £20,000 to be paid to a suitable equality charity in the UK after an independent judicial committee upheld a misconduct charge against the player at a hearing in London today.

No idea. The full judgement isn't out yet. World Rugby says:
"Unlike in cases involving foul play, decisions of misconduct cases are ordinarily reserved until the full written judgement is available given their nature and complexity.
However, the committee has taken the proactive step of issuing its short-form, oral decision to provide certainty to all the parties in the interim, given that the publication of the detailed full judgement can typically take a number of weeks."

As someone who is old enough to have demonstrated against apartheid, opposed the SA tour in 70 when no rugby body would stand against racism, I find the whole business pathetic.

Like JG, I'm also "old enough to have demonstrated against apartheid, opposed the SA tour in 70 when no rugby body would stand against racism." (I also walked round with long hair and a 'Margaret Thatcher, Milk Snatcher' t-shirt but that's another story!). This judgement was not appropriate imho.

Although I agree £20,000 is over the top to be fined, I suspect Marler still has some change left from his Six Nations wage.
Based on an agreement in 2012, players receive £9224 for being selected in the 23 man squad, a win bonus of £3075 and the squad share £500,000 for winning the grand slam.
Based on him just being in the 23 man squad just twice basically covers the £20,000.
Sorry,Ellis, that's not the point. Most fines for racist remarks come in at a few hundred pounds , the max is probably £2000. So this is wholly and completely over the top to a point where, if Marler chooses to challenge the scale of the verdict, he is likely to win hands down , ie WRU have dug a big indefensible hole for themselves if he takes them on.
