Embarrassing--- 3 penalty Tries ----we need new props !!

Post by fortysix »

If we are to mount any sort of challenge this season, we need at least two new props of proven quality
Cole seems completely shot, has the injury finished him off.. ??
Even Logi seems affected by all this, and Thatcher is far too lightweight at this level..
The writing was on the wall last week v Newcastle in the scrum. and so it proved today

Surely Thatcher would have pushed back the red tide ;)

Firstly, the use of Thacker has to finish now, retrain him as a 7 or a 9 or wave tara. Totally unbalances the scrum, vanVuuren has to be brought in if Bateman and Leo are out.
Secondly, the ballast behind is usually an issue.
Thridly, if illegal scrummaging is allowed then this is what ensues anyway. There was barely a legal bind last week from Newcastle.
Fourthly, Garner.
Fifthly, expected a smaller margin (tanks Garner) but not a win. Do not overreact, but wait until after the Treviso game to judge. 4/5 points against Stains plus 5 against Treviso gives us 99% of a home QF in the EC and a good position a third of the way through the season.
Remember this is not halfway.

2 losses away from home at this stage is no disaster, Garner is, he should not be allowed to ref at this level. Along with Wigglesworth he should be sacked. Rant over.

Whilst we must worry about Cole's form it has to be viewed in the context of Thacker at hooker who is half the size of George and as such what can the props do about that. Youngs isn't big by modern standards but is exceptional for his size.

As for Ayerza needing replacing that's daft.

So what's wrong?

We need a big hooker however our DOR doesn't seem willing to see that. With the injuries we do need to look beyond Thacker.

The "not 10" kick off - frankly embarrassing. Worse still, as it was a Tigers' knock-on he could have gone upstairs to ask the TMO whether is should be a scrum for the knock on or a scrum on halfway - that would have taken 1 replay.

Can't argue with the tries, but the fact two were gifted (on the basis of the wobbly scrum) by very poor decisions by the man in yellow is disappointing.

Guesses for the length of Barrow's suspension? 2 weeks?

Concerned whether Thacker is big enough to anchor the scrum but don't know whether that was the problem. Also Cole has not been at his best for a while.
I also wondered if we has as good a choice of studs as Sarries for their plastic pitch. There may also be a slightly different technique needed on these pitches which they know better than us.
I will reserve all judgements on our scrum until they are back on a grass pitch.
No argument about the result just the concerned about our failings in the forwards.
The ref was exactly as expected with major inconsistencies and some very poor decisions.

Apologies, but have I missed something? Why is Barrow likely to be suspended?

Punch to the head at the bottom of a ruck.

2 weeks increased to 5 for no previous (because he doesn't wear dark blue :smt002 )

I'm not a expert on scrums BUT when I was a lad the second row had as much to do with winning the ball as the prop. They don't call it the engine room for nowt. Secondly there was no "hit". You got pinged for that.

Thacker could exist in a world where he has adequate support from props and second row and the ball HAS to be hooked, not merely driven over. Otherwise just employ another fat boy.

Get back to simple scrummaging as a means to get the ball back into play instead of what it has become because of weak, inconsistent and inaccurate officiating.

Barrow gave Itoje a slap on the back of the neck at one point and I think Gill swung a hand in Barrow's face later as well. Whether it was a flat hand or a fist, couldn't tell.

Itoje was holding Dom down, but it will be Dom who will be cited I would expect.

Losing Ed Slater in the first half - who could have given us "engine room grunt" - was clearly a blow and not part of the plan.

Also losing Tom Croft probably cost us dear as he would have been able to challenge/disrupt/steal the Saracens line-out throws - something that they used very effectively in the second half.

Don't agree that we need new props - but like others I am worried about Cole's loss of form and, to a lesser extent, Mulipola's as well.

Sadly it can't be dressed up as a slap. On TV it looked like a punch at the base of Itoje's head/top of his neck.
