Like most on here, I haven't heard the evidence. The reports from lower courts
tend to be sensationalised, especially when the accused is well known.
Assault is very difficult to interpret and can range from a full punch to a tap on the
shoulder with a finger. In theory, placing your hand on anyone, no matter how gently,
without their permission can be called assault. The higher end can then be judged as ABH of even GBH.
I suspect that his push on the officers concerned was fairly mild and in many cases would have been discounted.
Of course, being intoxicated is no excuse before the law but he was a young chap out on the town
and JPs are all human and in most cases, been there and have the T shirt.
So he was fined, reprimanded and exposed to ridicule in the national press.
From what I can tell, he is certainly not a delinquent so it should be left at that.
But I reiterate again, I did not hear any of the evidence, for or against.

It was wrong and it was stupid but I'm guessing it wasn't as bad as some are making out. If it were a light push in the chest then to be perfectly honest I would view the drink driving charge of Mike Tindall a more serious crime (I've got no tolerance for drink drivers as they are putting innocent lives at risk). Still, Tindall was convicted in Jan 2009 but he still played in the 6 Nations a few months following.

I am totally with you on this Will...The issue is all you have to do is touch a Police officer and you can get these charges (Whilst I understand why they are in place) I have a friend at uni who was involved in a fracas on a night out in Sheffield and this chav girl dressed in black tried to intervene so he just ushered her out of the way..Next thing we know four Policemen jump on him and he spends the night in the cells as said female chav was in fact a female Police officer..they tried to pin him with assault but thankfully CCTV showed it was a light push he gave her so he was let off with a warning or something like that...Whilst we don't know the ins and outs of the Manu situation this instance makes me look on it fairly..

Personally I think drink driving is a FAR worse crime :smt018

Would Lancaster have done this without the emergence of Joseph? Before then Tuilagi was the 13 and all other options had failed...Personally I think not

There is an awful lot of piety about this case. Manu made a mistake. He wasn't the first England player by a long shot to do so and he won't be the last. It does seem that he is being pilloried considerably more than others.Citing the bunny ears incident and the jumping into the water in NZ is just ridiculous..that was just high pranks. The media should back off and let him see the error of what he did and rehabilitate. After all rehabilitation is possible....just look at the current pontificating by a certain Mr Dallaglio and think about his misdemeanour a few years ago!I

I find a large number of the posts which are aimed at watering down the seriousness of the offence bizarre. Putting Manu to one side I cannot believe that if any poster read in the local rag that a Bill Smith/Jones or whatever had pleaded guilty to similar behaviour that they would try to minimise it !! A third of you would be calling him a thug , a third of you calling him a yob and the other third suggesting a public flogging .I would probably be in all three camps. Given Manu`s public profile and the need to set a good example to youngsters I would be even more critical of his completely unacceptable and disgraceful behaviour.

Only last weekend I myself witnessed a policeman being pushed aggressively in a small Leicestershire town whilst trying to get at someone else after a fight, the culprit was not arrested in fact he was escorted to the taxi rank and offered the option to leave the town centre instead of arrest, hardly an impact on the rest of his life.
I have seen similar to this many times over and also other instances such as a women slapping one officer and an officers hat being knocked off his head for fun, but no arrests.
I have even questioned the moral grounds of letting folk off for such actions and been informed each situation can be treated differently in order to keep arrest rate's down at certain times or to avoid clogging up the system further on a busy night.
Whilst not condoning the actions of Manu surely the lad has been punished enough, and missing a world cup is something that he will regret for the rest of his life and is a very harsh punishment!
We don't need opportunist folk trying to get even higher on their imaginary horses!

Does anybody know the actual circumstance of what happened?
A lad who had had a few beers taking umbrage at a taxi driver trying to take advantage? Frustration at being handcuffed when the young man felt that he was, at least partially, the injured party? I don't know but this sounds a lot more like Manu than a violent thug out looking for a fight with police officers that some seem to be implying. The media who were outraged by a lad jumping into the sea and making bunny ears certainly seem to be holding back the detail.
I am neither clever enough to understand nor stupid enough to play this game

Spot on h's dad!
From what I have learned the incident was indeed nothing much to shout about and Manu has simply paid a heavy price for being high profile, very unfair and personally I am very annoyed at the media circus and certain peoples part in it.
As someone earlier posted, many who are criticising are usually anti Cockers and anti Tigers in general

Ruserious, you are as delusional as I thought!
Know the facts and know the people involved.
Manu has been treated very unfairly!

The point Dave makes is (unless you have lived a very sheltered life) you have seen far worse go unpunished on a night out...Now you may have lived a very sheltered life and not seen the wildlings out in City Centres at the kick out hours but I personally have seen far worse than this let off as per Dave's sentiments so to condemn a man who will lose out on what will probably have been the pinnacle of his Career (Home World Cup) is a little rich...

Do we think these things should be punished..Yes to a degree..But when we see Bill Smith and the Jones boys getting off with far worse than this appears then it doesn't sit well for us not to see Tuilagi smashing up the RWC and being torn apart by media and his own fans alike..

I think that M Dawson is a huge prat and makes his living these days motormouthing on rugby just as Peers thingy does on cricket.
Brian Moore yesterday talked rugby with a brief mention of the Manu situation.

This is now a club thing and if the England set up can't work it outthen that is England's loss.

Right wing media do their worst when reporting anything involving these kinds of cases. Manu is a suitable target because his actions reinforce right wing agendas of racism and migration.

What complete and utter rowlocks.

I thought that daft political points were not to be made on this forum.

And Cockers said on Sky that if we all knew all the details, Manu would be playing in the world Cup. Both he and Manu admit what was done was wrong.
But the facts are not in the public domain and people are jumping to conclusions.

Yet another Northampton Ex International with no journalistic skills trying to make a living off others. Get a life ! Ben Cohen & Dawson.
Let Tigers mentor Manu - End of story. Mind you a 3 year contract would be enough time to cure any problem.
