Katy Perry – ROAR!

Post by strawclearer »

Ok – I know this is a bit sacrilegious and I’m going to upset a lot of people and, of course, ‘Smoke on the Water’ was one of Deep Purple’s greatest hits and, yes, it still brings a lump to my throat whenever it heralds the arrival of the greatest rugby team the world has ever…you know the rest…but…

Is it time for a change?

(I hope GM isn’t reading this – wasn’t it his choice?)

One of the advantages of having young daughters is that you get to hear the latest songs from the grooviest of artistes – and yes I’m aware that sounds a tad old-fashioned.

Before you scoff, let me tell you that I probably saw Miley Cyrus swinging around naked singing ‘Wrecking Ball’ way before you thanks to my kids – and the same applies to the Robin Thicke ‘Blurred Lines’ video. (If that paragraph means nothing to you, you’re even older than I am!)

So – can I suggest that you have a listen on YouTube to Katy Perry singing her latest fab recording entitled ‘ROAR’. You might like to focus on the video from about 3 minutes in – the lyrics go like this…

“ROAR!

I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire
Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar
Louder, louder than a lion
Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar!”

Now imagine the base turned up; 20,000 Tigers fans shouting out the lyrics and Toby Flood leading out the boys!

What do we think?

(If you still want to stick with ‘Smoke on the Water’, that’s fine – but I can’t seem to get the image of Katy Perry in Tigers kit out of my head! Where’s a picture of George Chuter when you need it?)

I'm not sure the feet stamping would have quite the same effect. :smt026 :smt026 :smt026

Wasn't it Johnno who chose Smoke on the Water?

As long as there was a big screen and they showed the video of Roar I think it would warm a few cockles on a cold winters night
Of course this is my own opinion and other posters may have a different perceived factual viewpoint.

It's a rubbish song and would be completely awful to run out to as it's hardly motivating and crowd umpher.

Not unless Ms Perry herself was there to sing it wearing naught but a couple of painted on red white and green stripes. then it's something I could get behind (pardon the pun!)
Never mind the ball, get on with the game!!

I think the abuse we would suffer for the Tigers running out to Katy Perry makes it difficult to justify, although I don't have a problem with them playing it after the game.

If we had to change the intro music, I'd go for AC/DC and Thunderstruck, since they already play bits of it prior to the game. It gets you pumped up and you can shout the build up to "Tigers!" instead of "Thunder".

Most importantly, though, I would definitely change the music the opposition runs out to. Girls Aloud and "Here Come the Girls" should do the trick.

Tigers should run out to the "Might of Rome" from the Gladiator sound track and the opposition to "I'm a little teapot"

Smoke on the Water has to go. It's now 41 years old, everyone gets the clap-beat wrong within the first few notes 'coz it's actually too slow a song anyway.

Putting on some belittling music when the opposition run out isn't the kind of image that Tigers would want to have.

Leave that childish nonsense to Saracens & Quins.

At WR we may not support the opposition, but we still show them some respect.

I believe that one of the NFL teams chose that song for their team, but that the uproar it caused amongst fans caused them to pull it. No great surprise there!

A SOH failure me thinks all opposition gets a round of applause end of.

I'm not sure Sapojo was being entirely serious in that suggestion.

but Smoke on the water still has value for me
