Toulon may move the game

Post by Iain » Sun Jan 20, 2013 6:54 pm

Martin Crowson tweeted earlier that they may move the game to somewhere like Marseille. So don't go booking flights to Toulon just yet.

Marseille would be loads easier to get to by the way...

Anyone know how long it will be before we get definitive info on location for the game? :smt024

Toulon's ground holds about 15,000 so should be big enough!

[YBH] It's an absolute disgrace that this game isn't being played at Welford Road at 3.00pm on a Saturday afternon. [/YBH]

Is there not a minimum capacity for the QTR Finals? Before the CAT stand did we not have to play our games at the Walkers because of not having enough capacity at WR? I also recall being asked to give up my ST for Munster fans many moons ago. WR had a marque on the carpark for the Tiger fans who gave up their seats.

I'm not sure that there is a minimum capacity actually - I was thinking about it and I think the reason Saints and Tigers moved quarter final games in the past was because 25%(?) of the tickets must be given to the opposition. This meant that before the Cat stand was built some of the season ticket holders weren't guaranteed a ticket. I'm sure I remember a first come first served basis for season ticket holders a few years back. Pretty sure that's what made saints move as well.

There is a minimum capacity of 15,000 for the quarter finals. Saints moved their matches to Milton Keynes because the Gardens does not hold 15,000.

Fair enough! I thought that originally but then thought that as Quins held a quarter final at the stoop it must be less than 15000, but turns out the Stoop is bigger than I thought it was!

According to Wikipedia (so believe what you want!), the Stoop holds 14,816.

The minimum capacity is for the stadium to hold a 1/4 is 14000 and Toulon hold 14700 so there is no need to hold the game anywhere else but they do have to supply the away team with a % of the tickets this could leave lots of there own supporters with out tickets so they mite move just to please there own fans, then the semi final the game has to be played at a neutral ground in the country of the team drawn out first with the tickets split 50/50 :smt023

Out of interest, in a non-argumentative way, for my own education/knowledge.......where did you source this figure of 14000 from?

I only ask because I've seen reference claiming that Stadia for a Semi final has to have a capacity of 20k but there is no capacity limit for a 1/4 final.

I always believed, and it may just have been urban myth, that it was 15k, and I have stated that elsewhere. It could be I was wrong, I cannot find anything definitive despite trawling online this afternoon - that does not mean it doesn't exist :smt002

http://www.ercrugby.com/eng/heinekencup/rules/index.php

This is from Wikipedia, as stated elsewhere, make of it what you will:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heineken_Cup

The quarter-finals are played at the home stadiums of the higher-seeded clubs, or sometimes at a larger stadium in or near the host team's city. The semi-finals, on the other hand, are always played at nominally neutral venues. Each of the two semi-final venues are in the country of the first team out of the hat when the draw is made. For example, in 2004, Munster v Wasps was played at Lansdowne Road in Dublin, while Toulouse v Biarritz was played in Bordeaux.[7]

However, the neutrality requirement is satisfied simply by the designated home team playing outside of its normal stadium. Both 2005 semi-finals were held in the host's home city; Leicester Tigers v Toulouse was held at Walkers Stadium in Leicester, not far from Leicester's normal home of Welford Road,[8] while Stade Français v Biarritz was played at Parc des Princes in Paris, across the street from Stade's normal home field. The semifinal venue must also meet the following additional criteria; it must have a capacity of at least 20,000[9] and it must be in the same country as the designated home team.

The information for footnote 9 - semi final venues could not be followed-up.

It's not gospel but Ed Griffihs says 15,000

It's also noteworthy that Saracens apparently want to play a home game at their home ground :smt003
I am neither clever enough to understand nor stupid enough to play this game
