Another " new" signing

Post by sapajo »

Tigers aparently have agreed terms with former centre Matt Cornwell, who returns to the club as a fly-half from Italian side Mogliano.

If true (where did you hear it?) it's good news for him. He's been around a bit since leaving Tigers (Exeter, Stains and Mogliano) without making the step up. Done a lot to raise money and awareness for his mate Hambo, let's hope it works for him this time. He was an inside centre before so perhaps he's being seen as a replacement for Billy.

Having read the article he would appear to be more of a replacement for Staunton, quote "Matt is not someone who will be sulking around if he is not playing. He will train as hard as anyone and, when we ask him to play, he will do a good job."

I think this may prove to be the sleeper signing. I was always astonished that Matt was sidelined with Chiefs, as in the three matches I saw his vision was well ahead of the rest of the backs, often playing people into gaps with an astute pass or grubber. I don't think his style was part of their vision, but he certainly was not failing there. some players mature late - he may be one of them.

By the sounds of the article, he has been converted to a flyhalf, so he's coming in as a back-up for flyhalf, centre and fullback. So long as he doesn't mind playing back-up, this could be a great signing. An underrated player, will do a good job in any of those positions when called upon.

Welcome back to the family Matt!

Wasn't he nominated for player of the year out in Italy?

He's always had good distribution and good footballing skills. Some squad strength is always a good idea as Lancaster seems to be eyeing up Ford, Flood, Allen and Manu for international action. They all get called up and we cop an injury or two and we're back in the brown stuff. An experienced Tiger who can cover a few positions and who will work hard for the team whenever needed is a good option (especially if he's cheap).

Welcome home Matt.

Welcome back Matt,

went school with Matt, although not directly friends with, he was in the same half year of Welland Park, when it came to PE and it was rugby, give the ball to Matt he will do the rest.

Hope he can fight for a place in the first team squad.

I seem to remember Matt playing at 10 in the game against Argentina (?) I commented at the time that he made a pretty good fist of it.

Welcome back Matt.

(I suspect he was signed because the Old Oakhamians contingent has waned recently :smt002 )

Didn't see that one coming !

Good luck Matt - you're a star for me coz of all the work you do with Hambo, but I hope you do well on the pitch as well.

If Floody, Ford, Allen & Manu are called up by England or injured (in any combination), then we would have Bowden at 10, Smith & Forsyth in the centres and no bench cover for any of those positions....

...when you look at it like that, it makes sense to have some cover !

Of course, if we remain injury free and Stuart Lancaster sticks with the Safas midfield 3, then Matt likely won't make the Tigers 23 all season.

Who'd be a coach - or a player, faced with that choice ?

Cant remember too much of Matt's highlights so when I was looking through you tube I found this.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-REbFtJDP0&feature=fvst
From these highlights he looks like a quality squad player.
