Vu Vu Zelas

As anyone who reads this regularly knows that i am an advocate of the crowd making a lot of noise (on both sides) - I like shouting and singing and bands and drums and individuality of fans and groups of fans supporting their team.

However I am keen to know what others think about the Vu vu zela -

personally I can now see why people in the soccer World cup got so upset by them and indeed I think they are now banned in football grounds in this country.

There is no finesse in a vuvu zela - there is now wit imagination or indeed any effort in using one.

I think they are dull, boring and extremely irritating. They are painful on the ear and seem to be blown yesterday mainly out of frustration by opposition fans who were drowned out every time they tried to chant or sing.

there was no effort to blown them in tune or rythm to start a chant but just a random, tuneless blare from a mindless group who seemed unable to understand what was happening in the game.

It takes a special kind of idiot to blow a vuvu zela when your own man is trying to take a kick!

I do not want to start to give authorities excuses to start banning things and people that makes lots of noise(or else i may be out on my ear pretty quick) however I think maybe an exception could be made for the vuvu zela - The instrument of the devil. Tomorrow I may need to go and see an ENT specialist.
My throat is definitely in bad shape and the ears took a hammering as well from that dread horn. perhaps it makes the South Africans feel at home!

I'd happily see Vuvuzelas/horns and topless males banned (there were far too many of them on the terrace yesterday) from Welford Road in future.

Maybe I was concentrating too hard on the match but I wasn't aware of bare chested males or v horns. The horns sound horrible when watching cricket.

Husband and I were listening to the radio while driving and the air horns were clearly audible there over and behind the radio commentary.

There is a difference between air horns, the plastic tooter trumpets and an actual vuvuzela, I'd guess that most of the stuff I heard via radio was air horn noise, as far as I am aware actual Vuvuzelas were banned from the ground around the world cup period.

I find it hard to understand how anyone genuinely missed them.

Many of them were the plastic trumpets, faux hunting horns if you will. There were at few air horns that I saw and heard and also a few strange little mouthpiece devices (sorry don't know their names) that emitted a rather strange melodic arabic/middle eastern warble when blown - these weren't so bad IMO, but the trumpets were maddening. Especially when they were being mindlessly blown for two hours before kick off for anything and everything from Venter wandering onto the pitch to John Smit taking his MP3 headphones out of his ears.

But the "Red Army" didn't have anything meaningful to blow them about towards the end. As discussed with one of their quieter and more knowledgable supports before the match on the crumbie, Tigers made their noise on the pitch, where it counted. (but our supporters did a cracking job too )

When you're stood behind the central walkway through the terrace, and the half drunk oafs are walking into you (despite the big iron railings!), you notice them!

People post on here to "MAKE SOME NOISE", and when they do via vvz then they get complaints.
The problem was on Saturday the timing. During kicks is a no no. Other than that, let it be loud. There will never be the number to replicate the intensity of the world cup in SA. We all pays ours hard earned money to view, the days of "polite applause" are long gone, as long as it remains respectful what is the problem?
Flags being waved and umbrellas will be the next whinge point!

Believe me as I stated right at the beginning of this thread - I am NOT one of the Quiet brigade - indeed the opposite - and I hesitated to mention the subject because I generally get very cross with people who want to ban people singing or banging drums or chanting but the dreaded VVZ does have a particular annoying quality that in some way seems moronic.

I was considering getting going the chant of "You can stick your Vu Vu zela up you Fez, you can stick you vu vu zela up your fez, you can stick you vu vu zela....etc etc "
But I was so hoarse from yelling all game (and still am) and was just so relieved when we had won that I just could not muster the energy.

I'm with you mightymouse, i shout and cheer as much as the next man but the :censored: horns were very irritating.
Even watching on TV!

I'm with with MightyMouse the damn things are a nuisance.

I also am no shrinking violet when it comes to shouting and cheering, I've invariable lost my voice by half time but:

I and my family arrived about an hour and a half before kickoff and made our way to our usual spot about on the ten metre line at the end of the tigers dugout. This put us about 10 feet away from the Group blowing these infernal things. There was less than fifty of them but they were already making such a din that you couldn't hear yourself think. The trouble is they can just blow, and blow continuosly, compared with shouting & cheering where human physiology will limit both volume and duration.

To avoid any unpleasantness or confrontation, that could well have taken place, if I had continued to stand close to someone blowing one of these darn things, I took the decision to move myself and my family about ten yards further towards the Alliance & Leicester.

Whilst I am all in favour of lots of noise during the game I really did not welcome this racket for an hour and a half before the game.

So my plea to management is please ban the damn things from Welford Road.
