England considering Tom Youngs for South Africa tour

Post by Bertos »

According to the Independant he has impressed the England bosses:

Hope it's true, England have a real lack of depth at hooker and Tom has played well when he has been called opon this year.

I suspect that Stuart Lancaster will take a number of players at a similar junction of their careers - a 5 game tour with two non-test games gives him a real chance to see players he'd otherwise be struggling to evaluate at this level. I'd also expect George Ford to go.

What I did like in the article was Richard Cockerill's quote ".... as long as you know what you want from him and you don't go, 'Well his throwing is not quite up there yet,' and you write him off. When I pick him I know what I'm going to get and what I'm not going to get."
For when the One Great Scorer comes to write against your name,
He marks - not that you won or lost - but how you played the Game."

If it is true it makes the injury to Hawkins doubly painful.

In my honest opinion, I dont think hes ready yet. I think he needs a full season before England comes into the equation.

However I heard that England have been interested for a little while (including when he was at Notts) so it doesnt come as a surprise. If he does get called to play I will watch with interest and needless to say as his fan club :smt002 I'm very very proud of him - hes come such a long way in such a short space of time and what a reward for all his hard work. :smt001

If he does go, he'll be facing the coach who first suggested the move to him.

That's one way of thanking him!

In the loose he is awesome, and he showed he can scrummage in the lv final.
As Cockers has said his Lineout needs some work.
Below Hartley there is very little, Mears is too small Weber is over rated.
Take Tom and Jamie George to play the mid week games, and get Wig to spend some quality time with him.

I completely agree. Both Youngs and George have good potential so getting them involved in the International set up with the view to them being involved in the non test games is a good idea.

Also, Hartley might not be everyones cup of tea, but if you look at who the other options are there is no questioning his first choice status.

As already said, below Hartley there really isn't that much quality at hooker at the moment. By all means take him along, give him the mid-week matches and let him have the experience. He is going to be involved with England in the future, so why not give him a head start?
Fingers crossed for you Tom.

Think this is brilliant for a centre turned hooker to be talked about, particularly as it shows what a great club we have to see players potentials. Brits did it and look at him, let's hope Tom is the next Brits, and he keeps improving. Thought what Cockers said was so right, don't expect too much yet, but he has the potential.

It would be great experience for him. But if he has a blinder in one of the non test games, the push to start him in the test team will be imemense. Then he comes on in a test and his throwing isnt up to much, and the media, which spent the previous week building him up, knocks him down again...would be typical of our media to build somone up and then destroy them as soon as they are discovered not to be superhuman. Take him, play him in the non tests, and then give him a taster of international rugby.
There is never any points for 2nd place...

Hard to say as I believe there was one recent international player who delayed his wedding because of his first ever international selection.

To be honest I can't remember who it was though!

A number of England players have also delayed their honeymoons due to international call-ups.
