Toulon Crowd

Post by johnh »

Did anybody else watch the Toulon/Munster game at the weekend? I thought the crowd were brill, some guy with a trumpet getting them going..fantastic. I think we should get some French supporters (how about you Ze Stade man and a few of your mates) to give us a few tips as we seem to have stalled in our efforts to come up with something other than "Tigers,Tigers,Tigers......ad nauseum" or the old "clap, clap, clap clap clap...(you know the rest).
Somebody mentioned drums a few weeks back which could be great if it was more than just some deaf bloke beating the krap out of one. There must be some decent drummers or horn players out there.
And if accompanied by a troupe of nubile female cheerleaders (got Bills vote straightaway).........

Please, please, please, please be exact (and suitably sexist)- young, good looking, (preferably blonde) female cheerleaders: I was at a University of Montana football game where half the cheerleaders were blokes - it just isn't the same!! :smt018 :smt018 .

Toulon's crowd pre-match chant is called the "pilou-pilou"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6DremLHqkko (this one was filmed in Marseilles at a 50,000 seat stadium, it's even more impressive)

I havent wikipedied the thing but I think it's been written circa 1940 by a sports enthusiast. It's about the "terrible warriors of the pilou-pilou tribe, who go down from the mountain to the sea, their half naked women breast feeding their children under the shadow of the great white coconut tree, their terrible war cry (arrrrgh) I said TERRIBLE war cry (AAAAARRGH) because Toulon RED because Toulon BLACK because Toulon RED and BLACK."

There is no signification to it except to warm up the crowd.

I travelled to Toulon as well as Welford Road and I hardly can imagine the ladies and gentlemen of Leicester Tigers'RFC adopting the behaviour of the average Toulon fan! :smt005 I don't want to get banned from the forum so I'll give a mild description of the usual insults you get in Toulon. The bad boys from the visitors team are supposed to have sexual intercourse with same gender individuals.Roncero, for instance is a pet hatred of the Toulon crowd. So does the ref in case he awards vital penalties to the visitors. If you investigate youtube for a massive handbags exchanges between Toulon and Stade Français (was it 2009 ?), you'll hear the response of the crowd. Un-Welford Road as possible. I was there, and I blessed the protection of the Toulon fans I was with.

As far as drums are concerned we use them in Paris but
- it is definitely deafening so I don't sit too close to them.
- the drummers can't watch the whole action so they have to sacrifice.

Our songs are silly but I love them :

Supporters of Stade Français
It is our greatest pride
Listen to Paris singing
No one can make us tremble
Our thunderbolts are ruthless
We'll all sing together
Victory to Paris (that is, until the ref blows the final whistle)

and this one called "Cardiff" because we first tried it there

Listen to a song that comes from the heart
We are in love with our colours
Pink jersey or blue with flowers
There's the reason for our chant
Come on Come on Stade Français
Together we came in for support
And we'll sing till the end
Glory to the Parisians !

Childish, hey ? But it is fun on a Saturday afternoon ! :smt003

Indeed I will, but maybe not so much mercy on those who persist with the cheerleaders garbage. It does get tedious when it is added to several threads.

That is putting it mildly, Rizzo. It is pathetic to see this constant response whenever cheerleaders are mentioned.
Whatever you do, don't argue. We might never hear from you again.

Agreed, brilliant post. Makes me envy such a fan culture, though I'd never change my team !
