Possibly 2 new signings
Cocker's says there is cash in the kitty for possibly 2 new signings:

Not looking at one position but just generally at who becomes available and anywhere from 1 to 15. Matt Mullan is an obvious one that has been mentioned, has anyone got any ideas who else we might be interested?

Re: Possibly 2 new signings
I would like to see us sign Ignacio Meirs from Stade Francais. I think we are slightly lacking in the fly half when Flood goes off for internationals. I don't 36 is really a true fly half, more of on IC.
I would like another openside flanker to replace Mad Dog. I know Newbs is going to play there next season as a back up to Woods. However, we are a bit thin there, and I think we have enough fat boys.

All good 7's play on the edge if not they are a waste of space!!
Re: Possibly 2 new signings
An out-and-out 7 to cover Ben Woods.
Thomas the Tank is coming so we will have enough presence at 6 and 8 with Waldrom, Croft, Crane, Newby and Piennar.

The approach is spot on.
Strong squad with no positions crying out for immediate attention. Winning the A league also demonstrates the depth of the squad. Keep the money in the bank and see what come up either by way of serious injury (god forbid) or a chance that cannot be missed.
With the number of home internationals in the sqad the smart money may be to look at a good southern hemisphere player in the 30+ area able to offer flexible cover in the half-backs/backs. Not much to ask

Re: Possibly 2 new signings
A good hooker would be nice as I think Hawkins is more of a longer term project. A versatile flanker would be good, hence the interest in Myall I suppose! Can't see Backy doing business with us though, particularly as Leeds have retained their GP status.
I saw Marika Vunibaka play

I do believe there's an ex international open side who's gonna be unemployed soon, not going to be called up by anyone in the AI's or 6 nations, probably do the job for a few tins of the old cold amber nectar

Re: Possibly 2 new signings
My thoughts exactly, a natural seven to compete with Woods, as Newby is more of an all rounder than a specialist 7. Newby/Croft to cover 6, Woods/A.N.Other covering 7 and Crane/Waldrom for 8.Tiger_Chief wrote:I would like to see us sign Ignacio Meirs from Stade Francais. Also a fly half/Centre option to cover the loss of Mauger and Vesty. At present only really got Flood and Staunton for 10, Allen, Hipkiss, Smith and Twelvetress for centre.

Re: Possibly 2 new signings
Just a thought that for me we need an international class centre.......all those named and listed are good premiership players but, with utmost respect, we havent looked like creating anything from that area of the field since the Allen/Smith partnership was cemented in by Cockers.
If we want to be as dangerous behind the scrum as we are up front we need someone in midfield.......

Re: Possibly 2 new signings
IMO Flood-10, Allen-12, Hippo-13 is a good balanced midfield. Allen looks for the offload from Toby and Hippo runs the good hard lines for the forwards.ChrisNottm wrote:Just a thought that for me we need an international class centre.......all those named and listed are good premiership players but, with utmost respect, we havent looked like creating anything from that area of the field since the Allen/Smith partnership was cemented in by Cockers.

Matt Smith can cover the Hippo role, and hopefully Manu will cover 12. If (when) we lose Toby to England or injury however, we will be back playing Jez at 10.
In that case we could use a real 2nd/5 with some guile and individual threat to go alongside. Somebody playing in the same vein as Hook for the Ospreys.
