Would love him to stay but can hardly blame him if he was to go and would wish him all the best. However having read today's Leicester Mercury I'd like to think we'd make more of an effort to keep him than just offering a performance related contract.

Will be interesting to see who we bring for next season if this does happening, as with Mauger leaving as well we seem to be freeing up a lot of room in the salary cap.

I am agreement with tig1 here - dont want the lad to go but can understand it totally. Realistically we can cope there are a number of outstanding back row prospects to step in.

I'm another who agree's, if Lewis really is going then we should thank him for his efforts and wish him well. At the end of the day it's now a professional game played by professional sportsmen, who among us would honestly turn down a possible £100k pay rise if it meant moving to pastures new and adpoting an arguably better lifestyle? (excluding Dog Poo obviously)

I'd hate this first post to be misunderstood, i'd prefer Lewis to hang around and play for us rather than go elsewhere but if he's to go then i applaud his efforts, thank him for his contribution and look forward to a new era.

As I understand it Mad dog could earn an extra £100,000 a year with a move to France over staying here, and he could live in France, great weather, high culture, his kids can become bi lingual, the climate is likely to extend his playing career too.

As a pension scheme, three final seasons in France that tucks away almost a million quid has to be a just reward for his efforts and achievements.

I'd love him to stay but I'd completely understand if he left.
Trouble is Purebob, that scenario could be applied to all players.
Why should any SH player want to come to a dump like Leicester when
he could be sunning it up in Paris or Toulon?
It has to be more than money. While he will want to safeguard the future
of his family I think he owes his position and status to Tigers and England.
He was only recently saying he had been close to retiring when he was injured
but Tigers kept the faith with him and got him rehabilitated.
He owes us for almost two complete seasons out injured.
On a broader note, the French coffers won't last very long and there are
rumblings in Paris and Twickenham over the loss of so much talent.
Expect all foreign based players to be ruled out of the England team as soon as
they can be and expect the French clubs to be greatly restricted to only one or two foreigners, despite EU law. The Unions just wont stand for this much longer.

Hey Smudge

Its not for all players, mate.

But if I was fragile
And 31
And had won everything for club and country
And had a chance of a extra top-shelf playing season or two in a warm climate over the midlands
And I could also feather my nest to the tune of a third of a million quid extra over three years
And was still able to command top salary and a first team place at top clubs

Id think very strongly about it.

Maybe I have more sympathy because I am considering such a move in my own non sporting career as retirement looms of the less-distant horizon.

Everyone berates the mail but i don't recall it being massively unreliable for sport, the write-ups are often terrible and Chirs Foy is nothing on Peter Jackson - but the transfer speculation etc is usually quite sound.

Are you sure Bob? Many players from overseas have turned us down in favour
of the sun and euro etc. But of they don't want to come to the top English club for the right reasons we don't want them anyway. We should however expect loyalty from someone who is receiving a salary most of us would love to have
and is the product of our youth and club development system.
A great bloke but one who still owes us for all the time he has been earning
and not playing. Johnno, Cozza, Back, Kay white etc have all had similar careers with Tigers and England and yet stayed loyal to the end.
None of these bloke are financially insecure.Nor will they ever be.
If the Tigers Club and ethos means anything to him he will stay.

Smudge, not sure about England ruling out foreign based players, but I think the French have already brought in some measures aimed at restricting the number of foreign players. In addition to the salary cap for next season, I think i read that the French clubs will have to have a % of their squad coming through their academies. Can't remember the % (40%?).
Imo, the French clubs will have to be a little more selective. However, top quality foreign players will still be offered attractive contracts, much as they are in Ireland and Wales, and as there are 14 top French teams, that's still a good number of foreign players.

If, and I hope it is a big if, Lewis jumps ship for France then best of luck to the lad, earn your money while you can.

If you are going to go though at least go to a top team who will be competing for the major honours next year, rather than a run of the mill team who don't take the Heineken seriously, and confound any critics who will say you are only going for the cash.
