Note from the Beeb - very sad day - remember the voice of Scottish ruby - loss to the sport - mins silence at six nations would be fitting tribute

Re: Bill McClaren-RIP
For me he has to be the very best rugby commentator the game has ever seen. A wonderful knowledge of all aspects of rugby and never lost for a quip, always delivered in that memorable border dialect.
A true rugby man in every respect, we are unlikely to see his match again. He will indeed be missed by all who knew him.

Re: Bill McClaren-RIP
authoritative, knowledgable and a real lover of rugby. very sad day. hope they do have a minute's silence at the 6N and pay tribute to someone who played such a big role in the sport.
Re: Bill McClaren-RIP
This is such sad news. When he was commentating, his voice was so familar it was like sitting down with a good friend to watch rugby on the telly.

Very sad news.
An absolute legend of a commentator.
A voice that many have followed, none have bettered.

One of the true greats. The 6N tribute would be most fitting.
Still keeping the faith!
Re: Bill McClaren-RIP
Truly great commentator, as others have said the definitive voice of rugby. My earliest memories of rugby on TV are with his voice providing it. He will be missed.

For those interested his autobiography 'The Voice of Rugby' published by Bantem Press is a very good read.
