I think Aaron Mauger is a fabulous player and if fully-fit, we should definitely offer him a new deal. However it seems to me that the problems with his back seem to be recurrent and an oft-injured player is a drain on the salary-cap. Harsh I know but that's professional sport for you!
I saw Marika Vunibaka play

It we know that Cockers would no be foolish enough to offer him a big deal if he isnt going to play.

Im sure he knows what he is doing.

Perhaps the Tigers need to make a tough choice - accept that he's not going to be consistently fit & look elsewhere.

Or Muager gets his back sorted or lives with the injury. Many (most) back conditions may hurt playing sport but are rarely worsened by doing so.

During his stay so far I would hazard a guess that he has only been fit to start in around 60% of games - good value for money ?

I have mentioned this before, but I get moaned at from the Mauger fan club, but he was injured before he came here. Whenever I saw him in the All Black colours he always had a strapping on his thigh, (which was a result of a long-standing back problem) and was getting less and less game time for ABs. If he is a coach that's one thing but he's not going to feature much as a player. He must have had around five months off now, been to see specialist in Germany etc. We should get over this all great players come from NZ mentality. Get behind Matt O'Connor he's the reason the backs were playing better in the second half of last season. That and the return of Sam Vesty (who remember was told he could go by another SH 'star name'). The best backs in the world at the moment are Australian!

With Mauger, Flood and Vesty it was perm any two from three for the 10/12 slot and you've got a class act. To lose 1 was unfortunate, we lost 2 and now all 3. I can see Staunton and Allen being signed with a view to bringing them on into the position before/in case Mauger leaves. The back injury has really mucked things up, I just wonder if he was rushed back to try to bridge the gap and now we're all paying the price, Mauger more than most.

I always rated the guy but backs are funny things, especially if he has aggravated it by returning too soon. I hope he gets fit and stays but Tigers have a track record of losing patience with long term injuries.
Opportunities always look bigger going than coming.

I think that goes for most clubs these days. With salary caps in force I don't think you can afford to have stars who don't perform frequently enough on the pitch. I wonder, for example, how long Osprey's patience with Henson can really last?

No Vesty is not Australian! a Leicester Tiger for sure. The point I was making that seems to go over your heads is that Matt O'Connor was coaching Australia 'A' quite recently and some great players came out during that time, Giteau, Gregan, Mortlock, etc. (Remember Pat Howard? He was a pretty good Aussie centre). And like it not Australia is just about the greatest sporting nation on earth.

"If you want entertainment, go to the theatre," says Edinburgh head coach Richard Cockerill. "Rugby players play the game to win.15/1/21.

Im asuming your either Australian or a little bit crazy, South africa are better at both cricket and rugby union at the minute, so they would be a better shout for that title, but theyre both pretty useless at roundyball. If your talking about sports as a whole then i imagine it would be America, but look at the size of the place so its not that much of a shock, and they do have a habit of making up sports that only they themselves play. :smt023

I thought Australia had won at least 2 Rugby World Cup Finals. They're also pretty good at athletics, swimming, hockey etc.

Despite what most people think England/Great Britain are pretty amazing at nearly all sports - we may not be #1 at many (or if we are then not for very long), but we are top5/10 at most 'major' sports consistently - the only clear weakness for England/Britain is Basketball!

IMHO James O'connor is the best Aussie back prospect since Tim Horan, and I would put him in any team at 12 on raw potential alone.
Only 18 and the boy is already awesome
