New Stadium - Alternative Proposal

Post by grrrr »

Hi,

Many moons ago I posted a link to a survey to help me research my final year architecture thesis project at Newcastle University. Loads of you contributed and so thankyou very much for that.

I have finally finished and passed with a 2.2. There are some images of my final design for the redevelopment of Welford Road at www.finalcrit.com/architecture/joemoore if anyone is interested.

With it being a university project there were less constraints than the real-life project allowing me to rotate the pitch through 90 degrees to meet optimum sun orientation. I also incorporated a sports centre semi-submerged under the current NCP car park with a public plaza rising up to primary concourse level. I'd be interested to hear any comments / questions as opinions of the 'leicester faithful' are probably more relevent than my university tutors!

Cheers,

Joe

Nice design, there are some nice touches in there.

I like the differing levels all over teh ground, both inside and out and I like the twin roof type structure. Not too sure about the big glass box in one of the corners, reminds me of the horrible Sampdoria ground in Italy, but I'm sure I would grow to like it.

All in all, I wouldn't be unhappy to watch rugby week in week out in a stadium like that.

Well done.

Very nice indeed - did the work include costing !

And.....

If you did all this for a 2.2 - what do you have to do to get a 1st ? :smt001

Beautiful! Suggest you send to the architects - you never know, they might offer you an interview!

Thats brilliant, well done. You've obviously spent a lot of time and hard work completing that. I like the image of the walkway to the front of the stadium, good idea. :smt023

Very impressive Joe,

Design has moved on since my short stay at Newcastle University architecture dept in the 80s. All you needed was a straight ruler, a rotring and imagination. CAD must be great. Unfortunately for me beer and sport took its toll, and the closest I got to a stadium was the Gallowgate end to watch Gazza!

Seriously, I like the look of yours. Personally I don't quite get the new one, but I will wait for the real thing to pass judgement. In any case, it has got to be an improvement on my bench, which i hope the powers that be will let me saw up and take pride of place in my garden!

Good luck.
To Toulouse and beyond...

I liked that bit too actually. Something like that would absolutely buzz before and after a big game.
