The New Stadium

Post by scrambo »

Wow it looks good. hope the planning goes ahead.
Ive sent my email to support the stadium even though i live down south. Even hubby has said that the ground will look like nice!

Fingers crossed the council approve it!

First thoughts:

Ohh, its a Rugby stadium!! One large stand along one side of the pitch, the second one along the other side, and not many people watching end-on. Rugby is a very terratorial game, so not many people enjoy watching it from the end, whereas crowds of football fans choose to sit behind the goals.
Secondly, being relatively open at each end will mean that the wind will still affect the kicking. Interesting, as to whether this is part of the game or just an annoyance - I suppose it adds to tactics and challenges kickers to be the best.

Yes, I like it. I like the fact that it isn't a football stadium where they play rugby. I like that it is bold with great sweeping lines. I like that they have planned for 30,000 seats. Bold like the original Welford Road plans, but hopefully not as reckless!!
"And I've been supporting them every year since 1978."
"So you are a fair weather fan, then."
"Yes, I suppose!"

I'm afraid I don't like it.
It looks like a young architects fanciful experiment into stadia design.
Twickenham should be Welfords role model.

The two lopsided stands at the ends of the pitch WILL cause wind problems for the kickers (lets not make Goodies life any more harder)

The very long stand (over the Gumbie ) means that the spectators at the back will be way too far away. Its the 'cosy nature and nearness to the pitch and players which gives welford road it character. This new design will destroy that.

A far better design in my opinion would be to have stands of three tiers on both sides of the pitch and build over the clubhouse end with something more like the A&L stand, it will help when there's inclement weather also.
Make the ground more symmetrical, and keep the standing areas, improve the toilets and sound system.

Apjones - hubby says the same thing about the wind factor. Says its bad planning as they havent thought about the wind. I can kinda see that.

yeah the seats arent that close to the pitch but the seats arent that close to the pitch at twickers either. I like it cos it looks a bit different but i can see that there will be a wind problem.

You can't go as high at the ends because of the shape of the site, it is constricted by Welford Road and Aylestone Lane.

I think it's alright.

There's a wind problem with welford Road at the moment.

Every time I go I get it very badly. Think it must be the Guinness.

I don't think there's a wind problem at WR, but folk do say it's unpredictable. I keep hearing people behind me saying "Where is it coming from?"

I like it, it looks good and though there may be a wind problem it odsn't look to serious. We have to have the 'going down' sides, due to the triangular nature of WR.

"I like that they have planned for 30,000 seats."

:smt018 Well I don't - if the plans do not include standing please make this clear so those of us who do not appreciate all-seater stadiums can raise our objections :smt013 .

Though I am a season ticket holder, I do not support the present application. Judging by the picture on the website, the ground completely overwhelms the area it is situated in. Especially the excessively large main stand (judged in proportion to the 3 main stands.

APM, it's quite clearly been stated several times that the new plans DO include standing terraces, in fact the standing terraced area will be increased and will probably go around the front of three stands.

The New Stadium

Post by WirralExile »

I have posted this aganst the other thread about the "Artists impression of....."

I agree that the proposed stadium does look good, but I cannot see the point in flattening the A&L stand. This stand works; the seats are covered (unless the rain comes in sideways), there is good access in and out, a variety of bars and serving hatches and the view is unobstructed.
Yes, the Next and Crumbly need replacing, but why do away with the A&L. It would not take a genius to blend the A&L with the large Next stand replacement. I would like to see a computer generated image of the view from the back of the new Next stand; it does look an awfully long way back and when the game is over by the Crumbly what kind of a view will you have?
Does anyone have any views on whether we think we will fill this new 30,000 capacity ground, week in, week out? I personally think that the low-mid 20s is a more realistic figure. No doubt, there will be a large number of Corporate Prawn Sandwich eaters, but do they give us the atmosphere we are looking for or will they take us down the road of my other thread on bad language?

Another thing that has just occured to me... One thing that is not clear yet, is when they close the Next stand at the end of this season, i.e. April-ish, will the replacement be ready for the start of next season, i.e. September. If so, great! If not, where will all the current Season Ticket Holders in the Next stand sit come September?

Yes, the plan is for the new stand to be open for the first game of next season. The interior fit-out may not be complete but they fully expect to have the stand open & all seats available for use by the first game.

There is however the possibility that the club may ask for our first few games to be away from home (as Northampton requested one year) in case of any unforseen overruns.
