Brian Ashton

Post by Bill W »

It is rumoured that Randrew will recommend that B. Ashton be offered a one year extension to his contract (rather than a four year one to take him to 2011 WC. My recommendation is that he should turn this offer down. What yer gonna do then RFU???

Good question Bill, i'd doubt they'd have an answer for that! :smt002

I think we should go down the line of the football team and sign a big name manager. Who cares if he's foreign. I suggest someone like Eddy Jones if he's out of contract or Bob Dwyer (spelling?) or Rod Macqueen, just get someone decent in with a reputation that will make the players respect him, this may be player like Dayglo be quite and do what the coach wants.

Apologies for the structure of the post. I hope there aren't any English teachers on this forum

What's the point in a 1-year deal? Either get rid of him now or give him a deal to take us the next world cup. A 1-year deal won't allow anyone to plan for the future, it just drags everything out...

unlike English football - English Rugby has plenty of good quality coaches and managers:-

Dean Richards
John Wells
Dean Ryan
Neil Mallender
Shaun Edwards

There is no requirement to go to foriegn coaches - Scotland tried it and and it did not work - Bring back a Scot and things have improved dramatically - Wales' most succesful season recently was under a Welshman.

fair enough if there are no good candidates but there are plenty in England.

A 1 year deal - what a cock up - all the required support staff such as s. edwards also end up in limbo. :smt013 :smt013 :smt013

For a coach/manager I prefer to look at the best man for the job, not his nationality. To be honest I don't see the reasoning behind needing a national coach from that nations national team. It is the players who matter, and half of those were born outside of these shores!

I heard that it won't be a 1 year deal but a rolling one year contract.

The idea being that if things go a bit Pete Tong then the RFU won't be lumbered with a huge settlement payout like they were with Robinson.

I see Australia have appointed Deans, a New Zealander, as their new coach and look at the uproar. Appointing an overseas coach isn't always the answer. I say give Brian Ashton the job to the next world cup and see what he can do with all the so called new talent.

I thought he had a one year rolling contract.
Get shot of him. If the reports from the World Cup were true he is a lame duck as a manager. Another Dead Man Walking.
Get shot of him start again.
Reappointment is a real sign of indecision.

I'd love to see BA back as coach! Just put someone else in there to take care of the media etc.
