Johnno, no hesitation.

League Champion
Cup winner
Heineken Cup winner
Grand Slam
Victorious Lions tour
World Cup

All as captain. A true legend of the game. Nobody has ever bossed the pitch like Johnno did.

Comparing the quality of other players in their position, without a shadow of a doubt, in my mind at least, the greatest player of all time is Martin Johnson. Like for like, pound for pound, responsibility for responsibility he was the best.

There is no debate in my mind.

Fitzpatrick for front row. Definately!

Wing... Campese... ermm... possibily, bu if that's the case, so would R Underwood. I thought they were quite evenly matched (apart from one occasion, when... )

Possibily Scott Gibbs for centre?

Terrace Joe... I bet there are a few Aussies and All Blacks with similar stats though! With Johnno... I think Tigers fans may be a little biased and forget players like Fitzpatrick...

I might do these positions as and when I think of them !

Assuming Gareth Edwards and Johnno are concensus choices, I have to disagree with the wings. Campese was outstanding, but I would have to go with Gerald Davies and David Duckham. Mesmerising, and (IMO) relatively easy picks. Other positions are more difficult.

Philippe Sella at centre, and despite the very strong claims of JPR I agee with the OP and will go with Serge Blanco at FB.

John Eales would be a very worthy partner for Johnno at lock.

My team is taking shape ..... so far ......

?
Sean Fitzpatrick
Graham Price
Martin Johnson
John Eales
?
Michael Jones (McCaw will have to wait !)
Dean Richards
Gareth Edwards
Phil Bennett
David Duckham
Philippe Sella
Tim Horan (or Mike Gibson ?)
Gerald Davies
Serge Blanco

Looks rather tasty ! Back row and FH next, I think.

Updated, just stuck on 1 (Tom Smith, Fran Cotton ?) and 6. Anyone help ?

Ian / mm

Colin Meads is a perfectly good call, and I know is considered (unofficially) as one of the 3 greatest ABs of all time (the other two being in my team !).

The only reason I didn't pick him was that his career ended just as my rugby memory starts. I only go back to 73-74, and cannot judge the 60's (when he was at his peak). Barry John at FH was excluded for the same reason. But Meads is a perfectly good call.

As an aside, I think Eales is underated in this country, but many Aussies will have him as their 'best' of all time. Great player.

let's face it they are all amazing players and I would be happy to have any of them in my team

in your team for example - Mike Gibson was a truely gifted footballer and was a very close call for me - but Dannie Herber was one of the most destructive runners I have ever seen - unfortunatley because of the boycott only played 25 tests
- likewise Michael Jones was exceptional and i think i allowed my Tigers biased just sneak in with Josh as he was a joy to watch close at hand and that was in the twighlight of his career

i could go on all day..........................

Hi mm

Completely agree. Danie Gerber was certainly on my 'short list', and as you say would have been more of a world force were it not for the boycott. Shame (for him).

I wondered whether you would go for your namesake at prop !

That said, Cotton and Price are a great combination.

I still think 6 is tricky !
