Re: Best Rugby Player Of All Tine
Hmm quite interesting to read my own posts from 13 years ago and I see it was my post on Bill McLaren that prompted someone to re post this .
Dear old Bill I do still miss him. Current commentators would do well to listen and learn. None of them have his enthusiasm for the game I love. They are all either too prejudice or egotistical to give an unbiased commentary or summary to the rugby loving fan. Bill was first and foremost a fan. Yes he had played at quite a high level until illness struck him down, but he saw it from the viewers point of view. He described what he saw in front of him and tried to explain laws to the uninitiated and was never critical of players!
The most you would here him say was “he will be disappointed with that” or “he has guddled that it must be an awfully greasy ball”. Now we get all the self righteous nonsense from distinctly average people like Butler.
Back onto the main thrust of this thread and all the great players that are named and you can read back to see my great heros and the era I’m from! However one name I would like chuck in from the modern era is Parese. Given the international team this man plays for and how he seems to sometimes single handedly carry them and has done for years and is such a great inspirational leader, I would seriously want a man like him as one of the first on my team sheet. I know it’s a bit left field but I think he deserves a mention.

I think you have to make 2 categories:
Best in amatuer era: Gareth Edwards
Best in professional era: Brian O'Driscoll

Best in professional era: Brian O'Driscoll

Staggered no one has mentioned Jean Pierre Rives.
Re: Best Rugby Player Of All Tine
Without doubt the greatest player of all time is Richie McCaw, great athleticism, great engine, great rugby brain and totally invisible to the ref.

Your mentioning of South Africa has prompted me to pick a South African for my all-time XV .... Francois Pienaar at 6. Quite a controversial character, but his inspired leadership of SA winning the world cup deserves some recognition.
Hill Back Dallaglio
Screla Rives Bastia
Calder Jeffrey White
I'd go for Calder at 6

Barry John
He kept Phil Bennett out of Wales & Lions.
With Gareth Edwards that's your top 3.

To win is not as important as playing with style!

I’m very young relatively on this forum so I’m going to go for Alesana Tuilagi, although Dan Carter and Bryan Habana deserve good shouts.
