Indeed "the mouse" Mclauclan was my all time boyhood hero and indeed the reason for my nom de plume and if i was picking favourites then he would be in (I was tempted) - it is difficult to compare through the ages but Mightymouse was only about 14 1/2 stone which makes you wonder if he was able to compete in the modern game - big Fran on the other hand would have been a monster in any era and could play either side.
My other choice at prop, Pricey, I had the pleasure of spending some time with in South Africa in 97 and was a thoroughly good bloke. If my memory serves me correctly, I think we played in a game together in Cape Town - But I was very hung over at the time and everything was a bit hazy! The great thing about Pricey was that whilst all the other rugby Celebs tend to do the - "let me tell you all about my days as an international and a I am the font of all knowledge" - he would just sit with the lads have several beers and you would never guess that this quiet unassuming man was once one the most world wide recognised formidable prop forwards ever!

Great story about Pricey there, mm !

Your mentioning of South Africa has prompted me to pick a South African for my all-time XV .... Francois Pienaar at 6. Quite a controversial character, but his inspired leadership of SA winning the world cup deserves some recognition.

All as captain. A true legend of the game. Nobody has ever bossed the pitch like Johnno did.
Spot on! Martin Johnson is the best ever.

Michael Jones was so good he could choose when he wanted to play for the All Blacks. He was a religiours man who wouldnt play on a sunday. Even when the world cup came round he was in the NZ squad and would only play in games that didnt fall on a sunday.

Although the game was still ametuer when he was playing.

I hope this is the right player BTW!!

Hi moody

Yep, that was that Michael Jones. With huge respect to Back et al, Jones is considered the best open side ever. Considered a true legend in NZ (with Meads and Fitzpatrick).

Do you really think we have the best XV that this planet has ever produced ?

I think Phil Bennett and Barry John may just edge out dear old Andy at 10 !

I often heard that South Africa had some outstanding rugby players whom we never got the chance to see playing because of the sports ban on South Africa during the years of white rule in South Africa anybody know any more on the subject

Hi Mitchell

As I think a couple of us have observed, Danie Gerber was one of the world's best ever centres, but the boycott robbed him of much of the credit he deserved.

He is in SA's rugby hall of fame.

For those too young to remember the great Gareth Edwards, I found this ....

As a scotsman - always happy to see brilliant rugby - even happier to listen to commentry from the one and only legend - Bill Maclaren - without doubt the best ever commentator in any sport anywhere - The greatest! and a Scot!

Mightymouse,

I can't let the thread end like that!

I rejoyced on the day that Bill Maclaren retired. Not only did he subscribe to this mentality of "I'll support anyone playing against England" and commentate accordingly, but he seemed to have difficulty pronouncing simple names like Clive Woodward and Martin Johnson.

As we've already established that Martin Johnson is the greatest rugby player ever I think it's rather ignorant to insist on calling him Johnston...

He might have had good knowledge of the game but frankly I was too busy shouting at the telly to hear it!!
