BLASTS FROM THE PAST

Post by grrrr »

A few names that conjure great memories of Welford Road since watching my 1st game in 1989 (apologies for errors - just how i remember them. Please add to list - the more obscure the better!):

A - Derek Jelley
B - Troy Thacker
C - Simon Redfern
D - Malcolm Faulkes-Arnold
E - John Welborn
F - Can't think of anyone but Wells - he never missed a game
G - Simon Povoas
H - Bill Drake-Lee
I - Steve Kenney (great beard)
J - Jez Harris (special mention for the legendary Gerry Ainscough)
K - Nmandi Ezulike
L - Laurence Boyle
M - Richie Richardson?? (all i remember is one game where he played a blinder against Bath)
N - Steve Hackney (did he have a combover?!)
O - Wayne Kilford

Where are they now?!

What happened to all those players?

I know Troy Thacker had to retire due to a knee injury and is current a PE teacher at Leicester Grammar School and Steve Kenney went on to be a doctor at Tigers I think.

What about Nmandi Ezulike after he went to London Irish?

All about John Liley at 15. Any man who can drive a battered up old Skoda to a match deserves your respect.

Perhaps a 'Cult Heroes' style 15 is a decent idea:

1 - Graham Rowntree
2 - Richard Cockerill
3 - Darren Garforth
4 - Martin Johnson
5 - Matt Poole
6 - John Wells
7 - Neil Back
8 - Dean Richards (c)
9 - Austin Healey
10 - Joel Stransky
11 - Tony Underwood
12 - Stuart Potter
13 - Leon Lloyd
14 - Rory Underwood
15 - Tim Stimpson

Thoughts?

Are you sure it was 1989?
Maybe I'm getting old - no I am getting old!
Were they all still play then?
Must have been Stuart Redfern - I think Steve had gone to League by then?
Was Steve Kenny still around - I guess it must have been around the time that Adel Kardooni arrived.
I must dig out some old programs
Troy Thacker was a fantastic player - could have been a great if he had not been injured. We also had Harry Roberts at the time. We have been spoiled for hookers over the years.

Chris Tarbuck is at Nuneaton RFC with Tim Stimpson, both coaching but still playing a bit...

I was thinking about this a little while ago, after reading Rugby World. People write in with their best 15 for particular clubs each month.

But how about extending it - come up with some wacky 15's...

So, to kick us off, Non-English 15, since 1992 (ish):

A Frank Tournaire
B Ephi Taukafa
C Darren Morris
D John Welbourn
E Fritz Van Heerden
F Eric Miller
G Henry Tuilagi
H Josh Kronfeld
I Adel Kardooni (Even though he played for midlands!)
J Joel Stransky
K Freddie Tuilagi
L Pat Howard
M Glen Gelderbloom
N Dave Lougheed
O Geordan Murphy

Not so imaginitive I know - feel free to suggest alternatives!

Where on earth was Adel Kardooni from? I remember him as being quite a handy little scrum half.

I think Adel Kardooni is from Iran. I think he went on tour to North America and played for England A. He was a very good player and could, perhaps, have played for England in more enlightened times (not sure the old farts would have taken to selecting an Iranian)

The non-English 15 I think is a great side, if slightly left field!

I saw kardooni in the Bermuda Masters tournament last year (on TV, I hasten to add!) - he was still playing pretty well!

I think Potter got capped as a replacement against Australia on the tour to hell in 1998.

Apparently Steve Hackney is now a 'Business Growth Expert'!! - http://www.powermarketingstrategy.com/about.php

Stuart Potter - now there was an under-rated player. Seemed like a nice guy as well.
