Telegraph reporting Matera is definitely going to Japan, not to us or Bath.

I don’t think he was ever actually linked to us outside of pure speculation on here.

I think SB agrees with you and has decided there are better options at lock. Martin offers so much more as a 6 anyway that he might not have the chance to do if he was in the locks and, as we saw last season, has the potential to do a job at 8, particularly with tutors such as Wiese and Liebenberg.sam16111986 wrote: ↑Wed Jul 06, 2022 1:56 pm
Don't think he's played lock for the first team since. Like Liebenburg he could do a job there but is better suited to the backrow.

Makes sense. He's going to be in the RWC squad unless injured, so may as well take the $$$ whilst available and potentially take a contract in Europe after the RWC.TigerFeetSteve wrote: ↑Wed Jul 06, 2022 4:14 pm Telegraph reporting Matera is definitely going to Japan, not to us or Bath.

There is a slight worry if Sale do lose the Du Preez twins that someone like Martin is a perfect target for them.

Merry go round in France. Woki to Racing and Du Preez as a replacement.
Cant see Martin leaving.

I have had that slight worry in my head. Martin is a very good player with an extremely high ceiling. Does he want to be riding the bench in big games?RagingBull wrote: ↑Wed Jul 06, 2022 7:08 pm There is a slight worry if Sale do lose the Du Preez twins that someone like Martin is a perfect target for them.

I still believe long term we’ll end up with Martin and Chessum as our lock pairing. I don’t have too much fear of losing Martin, I think if anyone came sniffing, the club would let one of the senior locks go and shuffle the budget to bump Martin up. I think at the minute it just suits all parties to have him as a 4/5/6 hybrid.

I'm less sure about that.FrontRowUnionMember wrote: ↑Wed Jul 06, 2022 10:41 pm I still believe long term we’ll end up with Martin and Chessum as our lock pairing. I think long term it'll be Chessum and Henderson as our starting lock pairing. I think Martin will become our no.6 or no.8

He's literally 21 years old (birthday on the final) and just won the title, playing loads for his home town club.ABClub wrote: ↑Wed Jul 06, 2022 8:58 pmI have had that slight worry in my head. There is a less than zero chance he thinks even remotely like that. He played in 22 from 26 games he was fit for (and for all we know some of those earlier 4 games could have been covid or minor injuries).
Goooooodeeeeeyyyyy!

If pre-season starts next week for the non-internationals are we anticipating hearing about the academy promotions today?

I'd forgotten about that PRC game. Was thinking Prem debut.

I'm not worried about the Martin situation, I think the club are being cautious with him. Am I right in thinking he had a significant injury and concussion this season? I'd like to see him play more but I'm also happy not to see a young player get flogged and end up broken.
I think we'll see more of him next season FWIW.
