Re: WC Refereeing.

Not calling for a change in the laws. A player who is offside and makes no attempt to retire and/or interferes with play should be penalised (subject to advantage). As I understand it they are the current laws. In the case I stated the dummy runner did not retire. I chose my words carefully. If you...

Re: WC Refereeing.

If the player does not retire he is "automatically" offside. If he interferes with play he is "automatically" offside. What constitutes "retiring" may be subjective, as may "interfering with play". I stated that the player did not retire. A player can be offs...

Re: What are your expectations?

My expectations also mirror those of the board, tempered by the knowledge that those expectations may prove unrealistic in RWC years.

Re: WC Refereeing.

I am unsure as to what is meant by the reference to the messenger's intellectual and philosophical capability, I can only say that I try my best. The quoted offside is an interesting example. The laws clearly state that a player who is in an offside position is not automatically penalised. It is far...

Re: WC Refereeing.

But according to waffle aren't all three of the above vital aspects of the game for the modern referee? Whether or not they are 'vital aspects of the game' really depend on your point of view; I merely (and perhaps tiresomely) like to remind posters that referees are developed with them in mind. In...

Re: Where's Bill W

Why thank you Tigerbeat. I did hope that Dailywaffle, me2 and Rizzo would lift the tone of the forum if I ceased to participate, since they took the view that I stiffled their creativity. My hope may take an eternity to spring. It is true that I decided to (largely) cease contributing to the forum ...

Re: Interesting.....Eng Team v Ireland

I'd like to back up what dailywaffle has been saying. I went on a level 1 referee training course last year. This course was run by the RFU and we were told many times that our roles as referees were to 'manage the game', ensure a fair contest and enjoyment for the players. Not to enforce the laws ...

I do not consider instructions given by a referee development officer to be hearsay.

Are you suggesting that the referee should answer back with 'sir, show me the IRB link and I will do it'?

Re: Interesting.....Eng Team v Ireland

Can you please provide the evidence/links that referees have been given the role of 'game managers', I for one have so far seen no statement to that effect from either the IRB or RFU. Referee development courses. Conversations with referee development officers. Conversations with others that have h...

Re: Interesting.....Eng Team v Ireland

I am disappointed that in doing so you continue to push this referees as game managers rather than arbiters of the laws line. I am not so much 'pushing' the referees as game managers line ... I am highlighting the fact that referees have been given this role. One can debate whether or not this is a...

Re: Interesting.....Eng Team v Ireland

I disagree - players would soon get the message if the laws were applied correctly and consistently, the end result would be better rugby as the continual cheating and slowing the ball down would not continue. There is no point in disagreeing about the referees being game managers statement - that ...

Re: Leicester v Exeter

Not sure it will sell-out there's still plenty of tickets left but lets hope it does it would be great.Looking forward to the tigers in the park, the club seem to be doing everything they can to attract as many supporters as they can. The club are expecting a sub-20,000 crowd, nowhere near a sell-out.
