Re: Timing of internationals

CardiffTig - nobody said do away with internationals altogether or have less money for rugby. Growth has got to be sustainable, and as fentiger pointed out, more money doesn't just mean more games. I appreciate the attraction of internationals, and if this means sensibly constraining club competiti...

Re: Timing of internationals

Internationals are the reason that grass roots players and competitions exist. Less internationals means less kids will get into rugby and then eventually the professional club game will die. If there is an issue with player welfare then surely clubs shouldn't be playing 26 games in a league (next s...

Re: Leicester Tigers best uncapped XV

I'm pretty certain that Moreno was capped?

I could also be equally wrong!

Always found the laws of thermodynamics to be pretty reliable myself... :smt017 Theyre still debatable but law of biogenics? Life must come from life. And what about law of probability? You number 10 cards 1 to 10 and give them a good shuffle and there's a one in 3,326,800 chance that they would fa...

Re: Reffell still not in the Wales Squad

If I was Tigers I'd be pointing out Costelow, Holmes, Roberts and probably more I've forgotten who all listened to the WRU and have ended up in arguably a worse position Holmes had little choice. He was capped, and therefore had to sign for a Welsh side when his contract ran out else he wouldn't be...

Re: 4G Pitch bans? Leggings are allowed

You cracked first, Tig - I was resisting the temptation. However, I suspect this is an unwinnable argument. Selective quotation and confirmation bias provides a comforting sense of rightness for many these days, when compared with the wearisome task of ploughing through peer-reviewed science only t...

Re: 4G Pitch bans? Leggings are allowed

The issue with rugby and 4G pitches is that the sample size is always going to be small for any study, and so a conclusive answer is probably a number of years away at least. It does seem that there is little evidence of a difference in injury rates from reliable sources (i.e. not players' opinions...

Re: Reffell still not in the Wales Squad

I guess that it's one of those things where if the player challenges the practice in the courts - what's the chance of him getting picked if he wins? Remember the Bosman ruling in Wendyball? Nobody touched him after his legal challenge The issues are completely different though. There is no right f...

Re: 4G Pitch bans? Leggings are allowed

And another study saying that players have a negative bias towards artificial turf even with little evidence of physical differences between the two:

Re: 4G Pitch bans? Leggings are allowed

Here's a study from 2018 that finds no difference in injury rate, and where there are differences it is mainly due to the very small numbers involved (I'm not sure if everyone will have access to the full report): https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/02640414.2018.1458588 Interestingly, the ...

Re: 4G Pitch bans? Leggings are allowed

Wasn't there a fullback from Perpignan(?) that played at Welford Road once in gloves and leggings, and got lots of attention from the crowd that day as he struggled to catch anything despite all the extra gear?

Re: Saracens etc and the future

Interesting comments here. I don't think it says anywhere in the article that players' wages are an issue or that they want to turn the game into NFL. The latter would be nuts if they want to crack the US market. It reads, to me, like they want to jazz up the game, more cheerleaders and very loud m...

Re: Saracens etc and the future

I've said it many times before on here that rugby is pretending to be a professional sport.

Something will have to give in the future. And I doubt it will be player wages - who wants to earn 20k a year only to have brain damage by the time you're 45.
