Re: Tigers v Leinster (H) - Saturday 07th May 2022 - 5-30pm KO
The argument about spreading out the talent across 2/3/4 professional outfits versus 13 falls down when you consider the relative populations of E/W/S/I - England has 10-20 times the population of the others. I don't know the number of active players in each nation but assume it's somewhat reflectiv...

Re: Other Weekend Games - 20th to 22nd May 2022
My better half just asked me who's on (BT) this evening to which I replied Shale Sarks. Any other sort-of spoonerisms?

Just tuned in to Bears vs Sharks and now realise that SALE is an acronym. Not entirely sure what it means but could be South African Lancastrian Expats. Might not work though if they’re based in Cheshire.

How about a rainbow pack of cards? For example, blue for bad language, indigo for squint feeds/throws, green for playing in the USA, viole(n)t for fighting?

Re: Romain Poite
I loved his reply to James Haskell in an England vs Italy match a few years ago. Italy refused to engage in a maul/ruck at a lineout so it was open play and no offside. Haskell asks what England can do. Poite replies, "I'm not the coach." Classic.

Re: World Cup every two years?
Most sports now have an elite professional arm and a mass participation amateur side, for example, golf, tennis, boxing, cricket etc with the gulf between them getting ever wider. I suspect rugby union is following cricket in having a commercially successful top tier (ie internationals of various fo...

Re: Place kick position & trigonometry
The kicker is always range limited, these days with instep rather than straight toe on kicking there is always a curve to the kick and the ball is also affected by the wind and rain not to mention whether the kicker is left or right footed and from which touch line the kick is from. The only answer...

Place kick position & trigonometry
During a lull in the Olympics coverage of the 7s, I couldn't help wondering how far back from the try line the place kicker should place the ball / T to maximize the chances of a successful conversion. Cue laptop, Excel and some Maths that's been dormant for many years. Assuming the kicker is not ra...

There's a good write-up of the last 15 mins or so in the Torygraph:

Re: Euro Quarter finals
Were the Simmonds brothers playing yesterday? Just perhaps Eddie knows they can't step up level or two to be successful internationally. Ewers on the other hand was very prominent.

Re: 6 NATIONS 2021
I wish people would stop moaning about the referees. Presumably they are the best available and given lots of feedback on their performance. If they aren't the best, who are they and why aren't they being used? Supposing through some quirk of history the balls were coated in Teflon. None of the play...

Re: 6 NATIONS 2021
The team and player statistics are on the six Nations website: https://www.sixnationsrugby.com/statistics/ They don't say how many times a team kicked the ball but it does give distance kicked. On that basis England didn't kick more and the the supposed best two teams kicked the most. England very l...

Re: Has Rugby Got a Refereeing Problem?
MCC is spot on. There are so many posters on here wearing Tigers tinted glasses who complain about any and every decision given against us, however minor and inconsequential they may be. I often wonder how they can take in the game and be on the keyboard so much at the same time. Maybe therein lies...

Re: Has Rugby Got a Refereeing Problem?
Perhaps the question should be posed the other way round ie has refereeing a problem with rugby (union)? Too many rules and too complicated rules to be applied consistently by refs from different cultures, countries, experience etc. For example, even Nige and Sir Ian can’t agree if it was, or wasn’t...
